German-French collaboration has been a core part of the programme work of the institute ever since it was founded in 1959. In our exchanges, we focus on combining European themes with occupational, social and socio-political content. Our methods for intercultural learning are particularly designed to promote mutual understanding, thus generating an awareness of what it means to be European.
The teenagers and young adults – who are either engaged in vocational training or just starting out in their careers – are given a wide range of opportunities to form opinions and participate actively in democracy.
Many years of experience in intercultural collaboration are channelled into further training courses for disseminators, involving European third countries and countries from the Mediterranean region. Thus we lay the groundwork for a certified course of vocational training, offered by the German-French Youth Foundation (DFJW) for those leading intercultural youth exchanges, and help to strengthen the bonds between Germany and France on a long-term basis.
Our exchanges and training courses are hosted in Germany, and, in collaboration with our partners, in France, Poland, Macedonia, Tunisia, Morocco and other European countries.

Journalist's work during a revolution. How can you ensure your own safety and that of your protagonists
Chair: Kseniya Halubovich, freelance journalist and photographer from Minsk (Belarus)
Unlike many of her colleagues, Belarussian journalist Kseniya Halubovich decided against exile after the manipulated "re-election" of President Alexander Lukashenko in August 2020. For more than a year, she followed the protests in Minsk and reported on the protesters and their actions in a video blog: "Belarus: Diary of a Revolution" (Arte). In June, she was awarded the Franco-German Prize for Journalism in the Multimedia category, both for this work and for her extraordinary struggle for the freedom of the press and democracy.
On May 12, you will have the opportunity to discuss with Kseniya Halubovich how journalists* can ensure both their own and their protagonists' safety in a dictatorship. How do you walk the tightrope between detailed reporting and the possibility of putting those involved in danger? On a moral level, we shall also reflect on the extent to which the professional ethics of journalists change in a society that is under total control: Where is the boundary between endangering others and self-censorship?
The discussion is aimed at students, as well as all those interested in the topic. It has the support of the Stiftung Internationale Begegnung der Sparkasse in Bonn and the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung.
The discussion will be held in English. Registration for the event is required, please use following address: r.regn@gsi-bonn.de, indicating your name, address and nationality. Thank you!
